In addition to local clean electricity, our vision calls for
cities to be reconfigured around local and regional electrified transit systems thereby reducing the energy intensity of transportation as well as dependence on fossil fuels. Our guest speaker this month is Jason Meggs, a City Planning and Public Health dual masters (MCP/MPH) candidate at UC Berkeley (2008) who has fifteen years experience advocating sustainable
transport solutions. His talk is:

Electrified Transit, Walking and Bicycling: A Complete Urban Transport Solution for Health and Sustainability. Grid-connected vehicles (GCVs) are tried and true technology with a superior health and sustainability profile. They were extensively used in the Bay Area in early 20th century and are still in use now in San Francisco. Jason will explain why the ideal urban transport implementation pairs walking and bicycling with trolley bus, truck and train technology.

Panel Member Biographies

Aleka Eisentraut, Attorney, Wendel Rosen Black & Dean:

Aleka represents clients in connection with transactions and land use issues related to the acquisition, option, disposition, development and leasing of commercial, mixed-use and residential properties, including issues related to green building and leasing.  Aleka has also been monitoring AB 32 subgroup hearings in Sacramento in the areas of land use, green building, electricity and transportation, and advises clients in connection with proposed State policy linked to AB 32 implementation.

Aleka has been quoted on green building matters in various periodicals, including the California Real Estate Journal and GlobeSt.com, and has published articles and editorials related to green building and leasing in periodicals such as the East Bay Business Times and The Registry.  She also speaks on green building issues, presenting to groups such as BC3 (Business Council on Climate Change), CPN (Commercial Property News) and IREM (Institute for Real Estate Management).  Aleka currently serves on the advocacy committee for the U.S. Green Building Council - Northern California chapter, is a director of Urban Releaf, serves on Wendel Rosen's Sustainability Committee and was a judge for the San Francisco Business Times' inaugural Green Business Awards earlier this year.

Dan Whaley, Founder and CEO, Climos:

Dan Whaley was an early pioneer in e-commerce-innovating numerous technical and commercial practices in widespread use today.  In early 1994, foreseeing the possibility of e-commerce, Dan developed the first basic software platform allowing any general business to be transacted online. In the fall of that year he created an online presence for a west-coast restaurant delivery company, Waiters on Wheels, that conducted one of the first retail transactions over made over the web. About the same time, while reviewing major commercial categories he realized that travel reservations were ideally suited to the online world, and founded Internet Travel Network (ITN.com)-later renamed GetThere-with his father and a good friend.  In four years, GetThere was the dominant provider of Internet-based travel reservation functionality to the airline, corporate and leisure travel industries--booking more web-based travel reservations than any other competitor. After an IPO in 1999, the company was sold to The Sabre Group (NYSE: TSG) in 2000 for $750 million-nearly 1/3 of Sabre's market cap. This still stands as the largest cash deal for an Internet company.

Dan earned his BA in English from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign in 1990. He has traveled extensively, including bicycling solo across the United States, driving overland from California to Argentina and living with Tibetan refugees in Nepal. He is an avid inline skater, a licensed private pilot and a certified ham radio operator.

Lyndon Rive, Founder and CEO, SolarCity:

Lyndon Rive is the chief executive officer of SolarCity, a single-source provider of solar power financing, installation and support.  After co-founding the company in July 2006, Rive has grown SolarCity to become California's leading residential solar installer, with more installations in the state than any other company in 2007. Prior to SolarCity, Rive founded Everdream, an industry leader in software and services for large-scale distributed computer management. Lyndon negotiated the company's partnership with Dell Computer, which acquired Everdream in 2007. A lifelong entrepreneur, Rive founded his first company at the age of 17 in South Africa, and in his spare time has been a member of the U.S. National Underwater Hockey Team.

Phoebe Higgins, Sustainability Programs Director, Community Bank of the Bay:

Phoebe is responsible for coordinating the bank's outreach to local green businesses and nonprofit organizations, as well as for administering the bank's Bay Area Green Fund™, which aims to make bank financing more accessible to green projects.

Ms. Higgins graduated with an MBA in Sustainable Enterprise from The Green MBA (Dominican University) in May, 2007.  Prior to becoming a Green MBA student, Ms. Higgins worked as Lead Organizer for the San Francisco Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now (ACORN), building neighborhood participation among local residents advocating for community safety, affordable housing, voter participation and youth recreation programs. Prior to moving to San Francisco, she worked as an Americorps*VISTA volunteer in Minnesota, organizing community members to achieve passage of the Minneapolis Affordable Housing Trust Fund. She holds a BA in Russian Studies from Carleton College.

We are looking forward to having you. Please RSVP by August 22nd by sending an email to Joshua.Levine@UBS.com and indicate how many guests you will be bringing.
