The Local Clean Energy Alliance urges you to pressure EBCE’s board of directors to redirect the proposed $15 million of ratepayer funds into local development business plan programs, instead of giving it away to UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital.
On May 18th, EBCE proposed gifting $15 Million to UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital in Oakland, for the creation of an “East Bay Community Energy Asthma Program.” This gift disregards the urgent need for investments in equity programs which address the root causes of asthma. Such projects include the development of microgrids (islandable solar + storage), building decarbonization, and reducing methane gas exposure through electrification retrofittings.
Community members, in collaboration with the East Bay Clean Power Alliance (EBCPA) have sent over 500 letters to EBCE Board members in opposition to the proposed $15 million “gift” and submitted a letter signed by 15 organizations, including California Environmental Justice Alliance (CEJA) , SF Bay Physicians for Social Responsibility and the California Nurses Association (CNA).
The Alameda County Board of Supervisors committed to investing in a Local Development Business Plan and financially supporting the just transition our communities need but cannot afford. The decision around this $15 million has the power to strongly address inequities surrounding the clean energy transition in the East Bay.
This item was intended to be discussed before August, but the board CANCELED the EBCE Executive Committee Meeting that was meant to occur Friday, July 29th, 2022.
The vote on this item is expected to occur at the Board of Directors Meeting on September 21st, 2022, at 5:00pm PST. In the meantime, we must continue to urge the board to reallocate these funds.
