Spanish Community Resilience Workshops with Mujeres Unidas y Activas

This summer, we worked with our good friends at Mujeres Unidas y Activas (MUA) to present information about LCEA’s campaign efforts on Community and Climate Resilience at their Union City, San Francisco, and Oakland offices.

MUA is an organization of Latina and Indigenous immigrant women with the mission to grow personal and community power for social and economic justice. The organization has achieved many milestones, including advocating that immigrant women receive prenatal care in California, improving access to Spanish and indigenous language translation services in Alameda County hospitals and clinics, and educating their communities on legal and immigration rights in light of federal ICE crackdowns. As part of LCEA’s goals to fight language barriers and climate inequity, we worked together with MUA members to understand the concepts of climate and community resilience, and discussed what resilience efforts they see in their communities.

The MUA members were exceptionally engaged in the discussions, and we learned a lot from them about their concepts of community resilience. The takeaways included that the women already understood the need for community and climate resilience, and that MUA is a longtime trusted community organization (a “resilience hub”) that provides resilience needs to the women daily. MUA members also discussed that they had little information on how PG&E and Community Choice energy agencies (Ava Community Energy & Clean Power SF) operated, so we plan to do more workshops soon. Thank you to MUA for hosting us!
