It’s the end of the fiscal year for East Bay Community Energy (EBCE), which means it’s time to talk about the EBCE budget for 2022-2023.

On May 18, EBCE dropped a bomb on the budget–a proposed sweetheart deal of $15 Million to UCSF Benihoff Children’s Hospital in Oakland to start the “East Bay Community Energy Asthma Program.”  This might sound good at first, but the truth of the matter is it ignores community calls for 40% investments in equity programs and projects that address root causes of asthma and prevention of triggers. Such projects like microgrids (islandable solar + storage) or building decarbonization & electrification retrofits that reduce or eliminate methane gas exposure.

Last year we launched A Role for East Bay Community Energy in Advancing Equity for Environmental Justice; a call for East Bay Community Energy to start putting their investments where their marketing is and match calls for Justice 40 — providing 40% of the Local Development Business plan budget investments in equity based programs and projects in communities historically burdened by pollution.  This sign-on included 33 organizations.

Since then we have had some victorie with EBCE issuing electricity bill credits and nonprofit outreach grants to help households who are behind on payments.

Together, we can demand that our money towards electricity should come back to the communities that need the resources the most; Clean Power to the People!
