PG&E’s Diablo Canyon Nuclear Energy - Transparency issues and a False Solution to Climate Change

The vote on PG&E’s Diablo Canyon nuclear energy at Ava Community Energy is expected to happen on Wednesday, July 17th. Help us send a message to our Ava Community Energy board members, “We don't need PG&E's nuclear energy in our clean energy program.”  

Please sign the petition and/or make a comment at the Ava Community Energy Board meeting. The agency should post an agenda here late Friday for the next Ava Community Energy board meeting on Wednesday July 17 at 6:00pm.

Since the first discussions on this issue in April and May, more and more transparency issues have become apparent.  Ava staff were inappropriately encouraging a biased approval for nuclear energy before the relevant public documents were available for the board members and general public to review. Normally, PG&E would file an advice letter to the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) laying out the terms and details of the energy offer.  However, that information had not even yet been filed until June 12 and is pending a response from the CPUC.

In addition, we see nuclear energy as a false solution to the climate crisis. It delays and distracts from critically overdue local investments like solar microgrids and community shared solar. It ignores the desperate cries for solutions for environmental justice communities that have borne the brunt of environmental racism, a lack of good jobs and disinvestment. PG&E’s Diablo Canyon nuclear plant is nearly forty years old;, that is the lifespan of a nuclear power plant.  When you extend the life of an aging plant that poses increased risk to the workers and surrounding community, but nuclear fallout can be a far greater concern impacting communities beyond our coast.
